Our Houston area communities will all soon be sending their scholars back to school for the 2009-2010 school year, and we at Friendswood Development Company could not be prouder. As we reflect on the past productive school years with the Houston communities and imagine the even greater things to come, we predict one of the most successful school years in the Houston area yet.

A Legacy

Friendswood Development has become a foundation for the Houston population and its future. The communities we have developed span across an array of award-winning school districts. Our communities' educational repertoire now includes: TEA Recognized Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D., Lamar Consolidated I.S.D., TEA Recognized Alvin I.S.D., TEA Recognized New Caney I.S.D., Conroe I.S.D., and TEA Recognized Friendswood I.S.D.

Congratulations are in due order for Friendswood High School! For the first time in the 12-year history of the award, Friendswood High has won the deserved Lone Star Cup for overall achievement in athletic and academic championships.

The championships include one-act plays, marching band and the state academic meet as well as various other athletic and academic performances, with points awarded based on state, regional and district finishes.

Friendswood HS is the first Class 4A school from the greater Houston area to win the Lone Star Cup, which recognizes high schools in all University Interscholastic League classifications based on their overall team achievements. Not only will Friendswood HS be able to showcase their very own Texas Cup Trophy, but the school will also receive a $1,000 scholarship presented by the Texas Dodge Dealers. In addition to the state academic championship, Friendswood HS also reached the state finals in girls soccer and the state semifinals in football and volleyball.

"We're thrilled," said Friendswood ISD Superintendent of Schools Trish Hanks. "We did win the (Class) 4A UIL academic state championship this year so that gave us some extra points and we had really good results with all of our athletic teams this year."

This year’s win by Friendswood ended rival school Highland Park’s string of six consecutive Lone Star Cup trophy wins in the Class 4A classification. That trophy now proudly resides in Friendswood’s spotlighted place of honor.

Both the Hometown Bank of Friendswood and the Friendswood ISD Education Foundation are celebrating their own 10-year anniversaries. In honor of the event, Hometown Bank maintains its tradition of donating $5,000 to the Foundation every year. So far, the Bank has given $50,000 to the organization that rewards grants to recognized teachers and the school district, all for the betterment of the children.

“We are happy to partner with Friendswood ISD to impact children and teachers in the exemplary district,” said Vice President Allan Rasmussen. “As both of us celebrate 10 years, we stand together and look forward to the next 10.”

This positive attitude is echoed in the bank’s optimistic outlook for the economic future. “I am very excited about the local economic outlook for 2009. The performance of a community bank is a direct reflection of the local economy we serve. Our citizens have a strong will and a determined heart, and their positive attitude will move our economy forward,” said Bank President and CEO Jimmy Rasmussen.

Another testament to the outstanding student achievements in the Friendswood Independent School District is the announcement of a NASA internship awarded to a Friendswood High School student. Elizabeth Conger of Friendswood ISD has been chosen along with 344 other Texas high school juniors to be a part of the High School Aerospace Scholars Programs. Soon she will be traveling to NASA’s Johnson Space Center to participate in a one-week summer internship.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Conger was selected as one of 354 high school juniors from across Texas to participate in this prestigious program. Prior to being chosen, students had to complete 10 web-based assignments during the school year and maintain at least an 86 average in order to qualify for the internship.

NeighborhoodScout.com recently ranked the nation’s top metro areas with the best public schools. The goal of the search was to identify 20 of America's largest metro areas and to uncover those neighborhoods that offer the best public schools for consumers’ housing dollar.

It identified a No. 1 pick neighborhood in each metro area. These 20 neighborhoods offer a way to buy into great schools at appealing prices. The site further states that “most people expect to pay a lot more to get into school districts of this quality.”

Also taken into consideration was median home price, location and of course the school district’s rating and student performance.

Among the nation’s top 20 metro markets was Houston and in this area, Friendswood was ranked No. 1 because of the outstanding schools in the exemplary rated Friendswood Independent School District.

Among the many students benefiting from an exceptional education are those living in West Ranch, Friendswood Development Company’s master-planned community located off FM 518 in the City of Friendswood. West Ranch offers new homes by top Houston builders and price ranges that vary from the $280,000s to the $700,000s. For more information, visit the website at www.visitwestranch.com.

The Friendswood Independent School District, known for its exemplary rating by the Texas Education Agency and the outstanding achievements of its students and teachers, has even more reason to be proud. Two Friendswood High School students are among eight chosen musical scholars around the Greater Houston area to participate at the Houston Grand Opera's High School Voice Studio.

Friendswood’s  Eizabeth Conger and Catherine Goode will receive voice lessons from the Houston Grand Opera staff, prepare for college auditions and receive a stipend to assist with those auditions.

The coveted Houston Grand Opera Vocal Training Program for High School Students is a sought-after program and an honor for the students who are selected.
