Open House Weekends Set in Lakes of Savannah, Lakemont and West Ranch

Next weekend, June 12 & 13, three Friendswood Development Company communities will host open house events, offering visitors to tour both new and resale homes.

Lakes of Savannah, located just two miles from SH 288 in the Pearland area, Lakemont, located Westpark Tollway and Mason Road; and West Ranch located in the City of Friendswood - will all showcase a variety of new homes ready for move-in, decorated models and resale homes open with Realtors on site to answer questions.

The open house event will take place on Saturday June 12 and Sunday, June 13. New homes are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.Resale homes are open from 1- p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The event, which began in Fairfield and has continued for years, is popular among residents and home shoppers because it gives them the opportunity to see the wide variety of homes available, talk to Realtors and new home sales professionals, and often talk to residents and find out why they are making these Friendswood Development Co. communities their home. Earlier this year, Friendswood Development Company’s north communities of Graystone Hills and Oakhurst at Kingwood joined in participating in open house events, and now its south and southwest communities will do the same.

In addition to touring available new homes, visitors to the three communities can tour beautifully decorated models, including newly opened models by some of Houston's top builders.

New Models, New Sections Now Open in Lakemont

Visitors to Lakemont can tour brand new models by D.R. Horton Homes, Brighton Homes and Gehan Homes, and a new collection of designs by Lennar. Lake view home sites are now available in this master-planned community home to the exemplary rated McNeill Elementary School.

Brighton Homes’ new two-story model is now open daily in Lakemont Shores. Gehan Homes’ new model now open in the community’s newest section – Lakemont Shores, and Gehan Homes, open in Lakemont Manor and D.R. Horton just opened a decorated model in Lakemont Ridge.

Gehan Homes Joins Lakemont Builder Line-up

Gehan Homes is the newest builder to joined master-planned Lakemont by Friendswood Development Company. Located off Mason Road adjacent to the entrance of the Westpark Tollway, Lakemont features new homes priced from the $140,000s to the $300,000s by Perry Homes, Lennar, J. Patrick Homes and Brighton Homes.

Gehan Homes, known for innovative designs throughout the Houston area, will offer its Premier Collection of home designs priced from the $140,000s to the $180,000s. The one- and two-story floor plans range in size from 1,520 to more than 2,700 square feet.

Alvin ISD earns high ratings by the TEA

In its first year, Lakes of Savannah Elementary, located in the Lakes of Savannah master-planned community, earned an “Exemplary” rating by the Texas Education Agency. The district in which it is located – Alvin Independent School District, has earned the acclaimed “Recognized” rating – an accomplishment that represents hard work and outstanding achievement by students and teachers.

Overall, nine Alvin ISD campuses achieved exemplary status while 10 were recognized in the 2009 TEA ratings released this week.

Nolan Ryan Junior High School also in its first year and serving children in Lakes of Savannah, achieved a “Recognized” rating. And, Manvel High School, where high school-age students living in Lakes of Savannah attend, received a “Recognized” rating as well.

Alvin's "Recognized" rating is comparable to Pearland ISD and higher than Ft. Bend ISD's rating which is "Acceptable."

“This is an outstanding accomplishment for the schools and the district, and shows the commitment of teachers, students and parents,” said Misty Watkins, Marketing Director for Lakes of Savannah. “Children at all levels are receiving an outstanding education in the Alvin ISD – a district in which we are proud to be located.”

McNeill Elementary School Principal Earns National Honor

McNeill Elementary School Principal Ken Davis is the Texas 2009 Elementary Level National Distinguished Principal. McNeill Elementary School serves elementary school age children living in Lakemont.

Davis is described as an incredible role model who believes in every child, every day and although he is highly admired and respected by his students and colleagues, he was surprised with the recent announcement that was made before more than 2,300 educators at the Texas Elementary Principals & Supervisors Association’s (TEPSA) Summer Conference.

Davis received a check for $10,000, and will represent Texas at the National Distinguished Principals program held in Washington, D.C. in October.

“Ken’s leadership skills are evident in all of his work,” TEPSA Executive Director Sandi Borden said. “Whether leading his campus, working in his school district or serving as a TEPSA volunteer, he exemplifies the spirit of a true learning leader.”

Leading a melting pot of 27 cultures, Davis has created a school family that collaborates to achieve academic, social and behavioral goals for each child. Working diligently beside his staff, Davis empowers people to seek innovations, share ideas and implement best practices for students.

In Lamar CISD, Davis is known as a principal who will inquire about instructional programming, seek solutions regarding curriculum issues, share information with colleagues and serve as an advocate for students. Before opening McNeill this year Davis led Pink Elementary, from academically acceptable to exemplary.

Each year, Texas recognizes one National Distinguished Principal from the elementary level and one from the middle level. Hubenak Elementary principal Diane Parks was the Texas National Distinguished Principal in 2007.

Since 1917, TEPSA has served Texas principals and supervisors. TEPSA has more than 5,300 members. These administrators supervise more than 150,000 teachers who direct the activities of more than 2.3 million PreK-8 school children.

Lamar CISD Wins Top Honors, $100,000 in H-E-B Excellence In Education Awards

The Lamar Consolidated Independent School District has earned top honors in the H-E-B Excellence in Education Award and $100,000 that will benefit the district’s education foundation. LCISD was recognized in a recent awards ceremony in Austin.

LCISD Superintendent Dr. Thomas Randle led the Lamar CISD delegation on hand for the awards banquet. Lamar CISD earned $5,000 for being one of five finalists named in March. Velasquez Elementary teacher Sharon Horn was named a finalist in the Leadership category, earning her and her school a $1,000 check from H-E-B.

The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards was created to celebrate and recognize the contributions of public school professionals whose leadership and dedication inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.
This program is the largest monetary recognition program for educators in Texas and one of the largest in the nation. H-E-B awards more than $500,000 in cash prizes to deserving teachers, principals and school districts.

The awards are judged in cooperation with The Texas Association of School Administrators, Texas Association of Secondary School Principals and the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association.

Christus St. Catherine Hospital

The Christus St. Catherine Hospital on South Fry Road has recently completed a $50 million expansion. The hospital has more than 400 physicians and 664 employees of which 244 are nurses.

The expansion has yielded a new women's imaging center, a second catheterization lab and the only positron emission tomography in Katy. It has recently added two additional floors on our new tower that are already shelled. This nonprofit hospital is also the only hospital-based Sleep Center in Katy.

Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital

The facility, which opened about a year ago, represents a $100 million construction cost with the result being 127-room, 310,000-square-foot facility with the latest technology. The facility also has four operating tables and a cystoscopy room, and it employs 790 workers including physicians.

Recently, the Texas Department of State Health Services designated Katy Hospital as the only Level IV trauma facility in the Katy area according a report in the Katy Times.

Specialty services include orthopedic surgery, heart and vascular diagnosis and treatment, cancer services, women's health and advanced diagnostic imaging. Life Flight is also able to land at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital.

The explosive growth of the west Houston area is evident in the success of master-planned Lakemont, known for its outstanding master plan and prime location at the entrance of the Westpark Toll Road. New developments are making Lakemont even more appealing with the addition of new campuses of world-class medical center facilities now in the west Houston/Katy area.

All within easy access for residents of Lakemont, new facilities - both under construction and newly opened, will provide quality health care and a wide range of services to residents of all ages, close to home. Texas Children's Hospital is building its newest campus in West Houston and will open next year. This new hospital will serve residents in west Houston and Katy with the same world renowned health care and technology as the original location in the Texas Medical Center. The 55-acre site is located at I-10 and Barker-Cypress.

Texas Children's Hospital reports that by 2010, Texas Children's Hospital will be one of the largest suburban pediatric medical centers in the nation. The hospital will be licensed for 96 intermediate and acute beds, an emergency center, inpatient and outpatient operating rooms, an ambulatory care facility, diagnostic imaging, physical medicine and rehabilitation services, medical subspecialty care and physician office space. When open, the new campus will be known as the first community hospital just for kids.

The building is planned to open in late 2009.

Methodist Hospital

Construction is also underway for the Methodist Hospital System's west Houston hospital next to the site where the new Texas Children Hospital is being built.

This new facility will be a 192-bed hospital with a state-of-the-art imaging center.

The new community hospital, which will be the fourth in the Methodist System, will offer the growing west side communities 14 operating rooms, a breast center, radiation therapy and labor and delivery services, among other features.

The Methodist Imaging Center will offer the latest in technology, including a 64- slice CT scanner, PET CT and two MRIs, including an open machine. This facility will provide patients with precise imaging, accurate diagnoses, and a personalized service. The hospital will also include several centers of excellence from the Texas Medical Center, including cancer, heart services and orthopedics.

An emergency department, with the capacity to treat more than 30,000 patients annually, and imaging capabilities, will also be a part of the hospital.

St. Luke's Episcopal Health System

St. Luke's Episcopal Health System will also be a part of the Katy area.

Plans are underway for a 90-bed community hospital on nearly 30 acres of land located at the southwest corner of the Grand Parkway and Kingsland Boulevard, just south of I-10.

St. Luke plans to develop the campus in phases as it grows. The new building will also feature medical offices to support the new hospital's facilities, as well as a senior care facility and a wellness development center.

Lakemont Ranked Among Houston Market's Most Active Communities

Lakemont's prime location at the entrance of the West Park Tollway, outstanding builders and new school within the community, have all helped it earned the ranking among the top most active residential communities last year. Lakemont was ranked No. 12 in the most active residential communities based on housing starts. Lakemont's new home sales have remained strong.

A new recreation center opened late last year in Lakemont, which is close to the Energy Corridor and is easily accessible to the Texas Medical Center, downtown and the Galleria via the tollway.

Friendswood Development Donates to Lamar CISD

Friendswood Development Company recently donated $28,873 to the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation. Two Friendswood Development Company communities – Lakemont and Walnut Creek – are located in the Lamar CISD. The recent donation is equal to a nickel per square foot of property Lamar Consolidated Independent School District purchased in the Walnut Creek subdivision that will be the location for Cora Thomas Elementary, LCISD’s 20th elementary campus.“The work of the foundation is extremely important in helping the district and the teachers provide an outstanding education for the students” said John Hammond, president of Friendswood Development Company. “We’re very proud to be a part of the district’s growth and achievements.”

“Hopefully, this donation will make a real impact on the students and in the classrooms,” said Javier Martinez, community development manager for Walnut Creek. “Schools are such important factor for many people when they are considering a move and we’re confident that Lamar CISD offers an excellent academic experience, helping prepare students for a bright future.”

“L.E.A.F. is appreciative of this wonderful donation from Friendswood Development.,” said L.E.A.F. board president Vincent Morales. “We also thank the LCISD school board for their assistance in securing this gift.”

L.E.A.F. was created to encourage teachers to develop creative instructional strategies in the classroom. District teachers are given the opportunity to make their creative ideas a reality, while positively impacting student learning. L.E.A.F. awarded more than $161,000 during the 2007 funding period and has awarded more than $732,000 in eight years.
